What the heck is a vampire shopper?
Wondering what on earth a Vampire shopper is? Let me tell you this – they don’t just come out at Halloween – but they do have a tendency to suck your finances dry, not to mention cluttering up your home!
Vampire shopper is the nickname coined for the often-sneaky act of late-night online shopping, leading to impulse buying that can clutter your home, drain your wallet, and bring about a massive sense of buyer’s remorse by the next morning. This can creep in after a long day, often fuelled by boredom, stress, insomnia, or wider mental health issues.
If you’re thinking, sh*t, that’s me! – then don’t worry, you are not alone. There are ways to curb this pesky habit, and reclaim control of your space, and purse strings!
5 signs that you might be a vampire shopper
If any of these sound familiar, you too may be a vampire…
- You have a never-ending stream of incoming deliveries from your midnight hauls
- Surprise parcels arrive, and sometimes you don’t even remember what you’ve ordered until you rip open the packaging
- Items that you don’t need, use or even want, are piling up all around your home
- Your bank balance always seems unexpectedly low – or even worse, your credit card statement is always disturbingly high
- You’re constantly suffering from post-shopping guilt – regret over unnecessary spending and clutter
But why do you get sucked into vampire shopping in the first place?
There many factors at play that can suck you into late night shopping habits. Here are just a few:
Psychology
Online stores and advertisers know exactly how to tap into your dopamine (aka ‘reward’) seeking systems, alluring you with the hit of accomplishment you’ll feel after every life-changing purchase. If you’d just buy this item already, you too can lead the life of this beautiful, slim, sexy, successful model or celebrity. You too can be popular, gorgeous and happy. You just need this one more thing to make it your reality. And the accessibility of online shopping means that you can get that hit anytime, 24/7.
Emotions
I work hard, I deserve to treat myself. Or, I’ve had a crap day, this will make me feel better. Sound familiar? Shopping can be a way to reward or compensate. It’s similar to excessive eating – I deserve that cake, or, that chocolate bar will make me feel better. But do you really need a slice of cake every day? Can you go without? When times are hard, or you’re bored, or lonely, it’s easy to want to fill that uncomfortable space with something else. A distraction. Shopping is the perfect space filler when your emotions get the better of you.
Timing
As we’ve touched upon, online shopping is available 24/7. This offers the amazing convenience to tap into this resource at a time that’s convenient within your busy schedule. But if you start using it more as a time filler or leisure activity late at night, your decision-making defences are at their lowest. This makes you more susceptible to impulsive spending decisions that you wouldn’t necessarily make in the cold light of day. Nocturnal shoppers tend to spend about a third more than those who shop during the day, so it’s easy to see how this could quickly turn into a problem!
How vampire shopping can drain your blood (aka your space, life & wallet)
Physical clutter
Your random, unnecessary purchases quickly pile up around you, filling your closet, shelves or floor – especially if you live in a small home. Clutter is not good for you on so many levels – just the sight of it can severely disturb your well-being.
Mental clutter
Mental clutter comes from the never-ending to-do list associated with your stuff – like tidying, cleaning or maintaining it, and the decision fatigue of what to do with it all. Should you keep it or return it? Where should it go, how should it be organised? And then there’s the task of returning it, or the guilt and frustration of missing the return date and being stuck with the darn thing. Then what? Should you declutter it? Even more of a waste! But the alternative is having your mistake staring you in the face, haunting you for years to come. You can end up feeling so bad that you need to cheer yourself up – with some online shopping perhaps…? And this is often late at night when your clutter is preventing you from sleeping. And so, it continues…
Financial clutter
The impact of unchecked spending can be extreme. It leads to the missed opportunities and experiences that more intentional spending could have afforded, or the discomfort of living from pay check to pay check. But in extreme cases it can also lead to serious money management issues, racking up debt and bad credit history that can have a detrimental impact on your future financial stability and purchasing power for important things like a car, housing and emergencies. Things can spiral quickly and it can be a long uphill road to financial recovery.
Ways to put a stake in the heart of your vampire shopper habit
If you’ve got this far and are starting to come out in a pungent garlicky sweat – fear not! There are plenty of simple strategies you can employ when you catch yourself browsing late at night.
Practical tips to curb the vampire shopper impulse:
The tips below are all designed to allow yourself the extra time to reflect, giving you the opportunity to make more deliberate and informed purchasing choices and to avoid impulsive decisions.
1. Create a “pause” ritual before you checkout
Resist the urge to click the buy button and instead, save the items in your basket for a decision the following day, or, even better wait a few days. You’ll likely find that your perspective has shifted, potentially saving you a significant amount of money in the long run.
2. Disable 1-click purchases and remove saved payment methods
This adds friction to the purchasing process while your retrieve your card details and type them in – precious seconds that can give you an added moment to truly consider whether the purchase is really necessary.
3. Set a “shopping cut-off time” to avoid night time browsing
Making the conscious decision in the cold light of day to only allow yourself to shop until a certain time in the evening, makes it easier to avoid drifting into the danger territory when you are more vulnerable to persuasion in the evening. You can even disable certain websites at specific times using a variety of tools and methods, including browser extensions, app settings, and scheduling features. Of course, if you’re really determined to, you can get around these, but as with the tip above, the added friction of circumnavigating your browser controls offers you extra time to pause, and reconsider your purchase.
4. Set up a wish list
It’s easy to set up a wish list in the Notes app on your phone, or on your laptop – whichever device you tend to use for shopping. These days you can easily sync notes or lists to appear in multiple locations. When you get the urge to buy, add the item to your wish list instead. Don’t worry, it’ll be safe there, and won’t be forgotten. The funny thing is, in a few days or weeks when you come to review the list, I bet there will be things on it that you have forgotten – a sure-fire sign that the items wasn’t that important after all.
Wish lists are also a great place to review which items are truly important to you, and what fits within your budget. This ensures that you prioritise the purchases that will bring the most meaning and joy to your life, over the ones that will soon be forgotten or regretted.
5. Track your splurges and set an intentional shopping budget
Much like keeping a wish list, tracking your spending and creating a spending budget allows you to make more informed decisions about where your money goes, and helps highlight patterns of spending behaviour that might need your attention. Being armed with this information and any weak points on a conscious level is the first step to making more mindful spending decisions going forwards.
Emotional solutions to curb the vampire shopper in you:
1. Swap shopping with soothing alternatives
Journaling, going for an evening walk, having a bath with candles, or reading, are all wholesome forms of self-care that can have a great impact on your well-being, without spending a penny.
2. Try ‘joy by experience’
Instead of buying items for temporary excitement, invest in experiences that bring lasting joy. Time is a precious commodity that you can never buy back. Spending time doing things that you enjoy, with loved ones, is something you’ll never regret. And creating happy memories makes the joy live on and on.
3. Decluttering!
Did you know that decluttering is the new shopping? If you’ve never tried it this may sound hard to believe, but decluttering can create a buzz of satisfaction similar to the high of shopping – but unlike the fleeting shopper’s high, it’s effects last way longer. The joy that a clear space can bring, not to mention ridding yourself of the burden of unwanted items, is a gift that keeps on giving.
Replacing your vampire shopper habit with mindful curating
Waiting to make intentional, thoughtful purchase brings many benefits. Not only is it better for your bank balance, it’s also better for your sanity! No additional clutter, no guilt, no random stuff to look after and find a home for. And, making more sensible decisions at a more sensible time of day allows you to curate a home and wardrobe that you love, rather than accumulating a whole load of clutter and stress that you don’t.
If you can think of your purchasing as ‘curation’ rather than just shopping, you can reframe the way you view the things you add into to your life. We all want a life that brings us genuine joy and happiness, and you have the power to either curate, or clutter your world. Curation is the route to elevated living, for sure.
